Extroflession, in simple terms
An extroflessed artwork is a wall-based artwork whose form projects outward from the surface. Instead of remaining entirely flat, the work creates relief, intervals and changing shadows that become visible as the viewer moves through the room.
It sits between painting and sculpture: the wall remains the support, but depth, light and viewing angle become part of the artistic experience. The term describes a way of working rather than a single size, colour or material.
Why architects use relief in interiors
A relief can give a large wall a strong identity without taking up the circulation area required by a freestanding sculpture. Its appearance changes with daylight, artificial light and the distance from which it is seen, making it useful in entrances, living spaces, hospitality interiors and yacht environments.
For a project team, the key questions are practical as well as aesthetic: available wall dimensions, viewing axes, fixing method, weight, depth, surrounding finishes and the lighting programme. Considering these elements early allows the artwork to belong to the architecture without becoming ordinary decoration.
How a bespoke work is developed
A commission usually begins with photographs, drawings, approximate dimensions, a palette and the intended atmosphere. The Studio then studies scale, rhythm, relief depth and the relationship between the work and the room before production begins.
Alessandro Butera Studio creates each unique artwork entirely by hand in Italy. Selected works incorporate LED light within the construction, so the composition can be experienced both in natural light and in an intentionally illuminated state. Technical requirements are coordinated with the architect, interior designer and qualified installers.
Frequently asked questions
What is an extroflessed artwork?
It is a wall-based artwork whose form projects outward from the surface, creating relief, intervals and changing shadows. It sits between painting and sculpture because depth, light and viewpoint become part of the experience.
Is an extroflessed artwork suitable for a luxury interior?
It can be, when its scale, relief depth, palette, fixing method and lighting are considered in relation to the architecture. The right solution depends on the room, its finishes and how it is experienced.
Can an extroflessed artwork be commissioned to size?
A bespoke work can be studied from the dimensions, drawings and atmosphere of a specific project. Any final size, material and technical specification must be confirmed for that commission.
